Now what? You've selected a time, determined a reading plan, and prepared a space, now what do you do in your quiet time?
First, allow us to say this again... everyone may look different. But, we also know that there are many people who really want to know what to do.
The short synapsis: spend time reading God's Word and pray as you read.
Here are my "4R Technique" as a guide:
R E S T
Carve out time to read God's word each day. Dig deep. Ask God to
speak to you through His word. Take notes and journal your thoughts as
you read. This rest is purposeful time set aside to linger in God's word.
R E L E A S E
Be honest with yourself and God. Release your worries, your anxieties,
and yes, your control. Ask God to intervene. Confess your shortcomings.
To release means to let go.
Be encouraged that when we let go of something, we open a room for God to work!
R E V E A L
Reveal is less about what we do and more about what God is able
to do because we have taken time to rest & release.
This is a time of reflection. Ask yourself, "What have you learned
in the scripture and what is God revealing to your heart through
the truth of His word?"
R E S P O N D
As you read God's Word, His Spirit will guide you in how to
respond. Is a prayer forming in your heart? Is praise bubbling up
in your soul? Allow those to overflow into your conversation time
with God. Is He moving you into action? Respond with a willing heart.
All this said you may journal your thoughts and prayers, write in your Bible, or not write at all. You may have a prayer writing practice or you may not. Some days your prayers may be long and others, they may be silent. There may be days that your heart is flooded with direction and other days you may feel lost. Be encouraged. A consistent practice of coming to meet with God in His word and prayer will be fruitful over time.
Today's Action Plan: Read Proverbs 2:1-15. Write a prayer inviting God into your quiet time.
