In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Genesis 1:1-5
This first week of the new year, we want to focus on the subject of creation. We want to marvel with you at the beauty of everything that God made and gave to us to enjoy. How do we properly coexist with everything that He has made with such care and attention? One of the most important things that is pointed out to us, is the fact that before there was anything, God already was. His Spirit hovered over the waters. God is always present, before and after this world, He was, is, and always will be.
By creating light, God began His journey with the world. He creates day and night and sees that is good. Everything is pristine, brand-new, and unblemished. What a sight it must’ve been to behold. We need God’s light to give everything rhythm and a balance of rest and activities. It is by His light that everything comes into existence, even the sun, moon, and stars. It is a precondition for everything that is to live and grow on the earth. And even if all the other sources of light fade away from the world, He will still be there, holding everything in His hands.
Prayer: Lord God, You are the Light of this world. Without You, everything would lose its meaning, luster, glow, and warmth. Thank You for every new day and night, for establishing a rhythm for life, and for giving us everything we need to live fruitful and productive lives.
Help us to acknowledge and stare in awe at everything Your hands have made.
Please shine Your light into our hearts and ban every trace of darkness in Jesus' name, Amen.
