The term jewel is a word for a precious stone or anything that is of high value.
Text: Malachi 3:16-17 Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. [17] And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
In our text of today it is very pertinent to know that God has special interests in some people. These sets of people are very dear to Him. God calls these people His jewels, His precious ones. Do you fall into the category of those God called His jewels? 
In metallurgy, no metal is ever found in the pure form, they exist with one impurity or the other (such as oxygen, carbon, silicon, sulphur etc). For a metal to be pure it must go through the process of purification or refining. This involves the use of extreme heat that melts the metal, this then causes a separation between the metal and the impurities. The pure metal settles to the bottom of the crucible while the impurities float on top. In the same manner every believer that is a jewel of God must have passed through God's refining process. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3: 23). God's eyes are just too pure to behold evil, they can not look on iniquity (Habakkuk 1: 13a). 
God allows His jewels to go through the purification process because of the love and care He has for them. He wants to relate with them as His beloved children. He wants each one of them to comform to the image of His Holy Son, Jesus Christ. God's purification process begins in a believer the moment such a person gives his or her life to Jesus, as the Spirit of Christ will enter into the person.
God's refining process may involve pains, physical suffering, disappointment, relationship loss, or failure. But all these are geared to make us better. The rough edges in us have to be cut, such rough edges as fornication, lies, lust, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, quarreling, envies, unholy thought and others. God's ultimate goal is to make us more like Jesus. Jesus said "Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit"(John 15: 2). The jewels of God are also subjected to a pruning process, however, more importantly is for us to embrace the pruning process with joy. Just as James said in chapter 1: 2-4 of his book "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing". Whenever, we go through trials we should not forget to ask God what He wants us to learn, for in every tribulation there is a lesson for us. 
The Psalmist said in Psalm 139:23-24 "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: [24] And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting".
One method of God in refining His jewels is the use of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit will peel away our sinful habits and characters and replace them with godly characters. This He does by these processes:
The Holy Spirit renews our minds by helping us not to conform to the dictates of this present world but transforming us to be that which is good, perfect and acceptable to God (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4: 23)
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin. Sin is the greatest problem of man as it separates man from God. The Holy Spirit will draw the attention of believers to an impending sin or nudge our hearts to any sin committed (John 16: 8). My prayer is that we should always heed to His warning. 
The Holy Spirit will guide us to the direction we should go in life. He will remove confusion in our lives by telling us the truth. The Holy Spirit will remove the dark areas of our lives by illuminating our hearts, giving us a clear vision of God's agenda for us (1 Corinthians 14: 33, Romans 8: 14).
The Holy Spirit will empower us to witness to others of God's goodness (Acts 1: 8, 2 Timothy 1: 7).
The Holy Spirit will teach us all things. As believers we need help to understand the Bible, as it teaches us the truth about God and helps us to see the faults in us (2 Timothy 3: 16, John 14: 26)
The Holy Spirit fosters unity among the Christians. The is very important as Christians strength is in their togetherness (Acts 4: 32).
The Holy Spirit helps us to have true repentance by exposing all that is wrong in us (Proverbs 28: 13, Isaiah 30: 15).
The characteristics of the Lord's Jewels. Let us have the attitude of Job who "said when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold"(Job 23: 20).
The hallmark of the Lord's Jewels is their holiness not their wealth nor their positions in the society. This holiness must come from a sincere heart to obey God.
They must be devoted to God completely.
They feared the Lord God - Proverbs 34: 9- 11
The Jewels are those who called on the name of the Lord. Joel 2: 32 says "that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance".
They talk to each other in praise and testimony- Psalm 66: 16).
God keeps records of their life - how they behave, how they dress.
They honour His Holy name i.e. their meditation is centered on God Himself.
The benefits of being a Jewel of God. The Lord searches the heart and test the mind to give every man according to his/her way and according to the fruit of his/her deeds (Jeremiah 17: 10 MSG)
God will be near them.
God's eyes will be upon them.
God hears their prayers - Jeremiah 8: 6, Luke 34: 15.
They will not lack anything good.
God will deliver them from any destruction. 
God records their activities in a book. 
They are assured of eternal security- 1 Thessalonians 4: 16-17, Psalm 87: 6, John 6: 37 &10: 28-29, 2 Timothy 1: 12, 2 Timothy 2: 19
 Prayers:
O Lord my Father sanctify me wholly by the Blood of Your Son in Jesus name 
Heavenly Father let my body, soul and spirit be preserved blameless until the coming of Your Son Jesus Christ.
O Lord fill me with the knowledge of Your will in Jesus name.
Holy Spirit make me fruitful in every good work in Jesus name.
