THE BRANCH’S WAY-Isaiah 4:2 (A WEEKLY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE)
TOPIC: DWELLING IN HIS PRESENCE
Text:Psalm 91:1
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
We will look at two other translations for a better understanding, the 'New International Version and the 'Amplified' version
NIV - “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
AMP - “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will remain secure and rest in the shadow of the Almighty [whose power no enemy can withstand].”
To dwell in the shelter or presence of God is a thing of choice, there is no compulsion in it. Anyone can dwell there. The word to dwell in Hebrew is 'Yashab' - 'to sit down to dwell or 'to be settled'. To dwell in the secret place of the most High is to be in a place of absolute safety where no agent of darkness or his weapon can touch the person. The Scriptures say “In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.”(Psalms 31:20 NIV). It will do us good to read the entire psalm 91 to discover how safe one could be in the shelter of God. God assured us of His protection at any time from both spiritual and physical trouble.
However, to dwell in the shelter of God, we must first of all seek out the place. The Scriptures say 'And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart' (Jeremiah 29: 13). God Himself declared to us that He is very near to us and not far away from us (Jeremiah 23: 23). To now get to Him we need to fulfill certain conditions, and these conditions are not grievous or burdensome (1 John 5: 3): to walk uprightly (without blame) example is shown by Job(Job 1: 1), to speak the truth always and not lie, not to say bad things of others (no backbiting), not to do things that will hurt others, to hate what God hates (fornication, covetousness, stupid talk, indecent dressing, giving or receiving of bribes (Psalm 15).
To those who dwell in the shelter of the LORD, God will be a refuge or a place of protection to them from the traps of the enemies, from any kind of pestilence (disease) including those in the class of Covid 19 that destroys everything before it, God will also care for them by hiding them under
His wing in order to safeguard them from terrible terrorist of the night and day. His angels will be round about them as mountains surround Jerusalem to carry them in their hands so that they do not dash their feet against a stone. No wonder the Scriptures say 'The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good' (Proverb 25: 3).
God sees you in every place you are, to guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.(Isaiah 58:11 NIV)
In the book of Isaiah 43:1-2 it says 'But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. [2] When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee'. God has given us many promises that cover every known need of man. God in His love for man has gone a long way to help man in all his struggles to overcome sin, sickness and satan so that man may regain the full dominion and authority that was lost to satan in the garden of Eden. To this end Jesus had to abandon His glory and splendor in heaven to dwell among men (Our Immanuel) and to die on the Calvary tree. However, for man to enjoy the full benefits of the sacrifice of Jesus as well as to be steadfast in the race set before him and not fall again he needs to focus on Jesus who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Peter was steady on his walk on water as long as his eyes were on Jesus but the moment he took away his eyes from Him, he began to sink. Believers can not afford to be far from Jesus, to be in His presence, they must be addicted to Bible reading, be in constant prayers and be fully obedient to His commandments.
David was one man who understood the importance of being in the dwelling place of the Lord, no wonder he said 'I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord' (Psalm 122: 1). David again said “Lord, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory is.” (Psalms 26:8 ERV). How many of us actually love going to church purely for worship? As many people go to church for one ulterior motive or the other. God is waiting for you to come before Him today, hear His Voice now as tomorrow may be too late. “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.”
(Revelation 3:20 ERV). God promised to be our God for ever and ever to guide us even unto death (Psalm 48: 14).
In conclusion it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust man (Psalm 118: 8 NIV) as He has promised to keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast.
