TOPIC: YOU CANNOT SERVE TWO MASTERS
Text : Matthew 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Jesus our Lord is saying categorically in this text that it is absolutely impossible for you to have two masters. It is possible for a person to have two jobs but it is practically impossible to have two masters. You cannot be a servant of God and at the same time be a servant of satan. You cannot be a servant of sin and at the same time be a servant of righteousnes. A person cannot be a sinner and a saint or be sinful at the same time be holy both are diametrically opposed. If you commit sin you are a servant of satan and not of Christ. Sin is the service of Satan while rigteousness is the service of Christ.
2 Corinthians 6:14-16 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? [15] And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? [16] And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? The result of this will definitely be disastrous.
Romans 6:16 - Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death (everlasting separation from the presence of God), or of obedience unto righteousness?
Your master is the person you pattern yourself after. Choosing satan as our master will lead to guilt, anguish and death which is separation from God. You should not be taken by your wealth or possessions lest you become possessed by them. Don't allow earthly things to take over your spiritual values.
Romans 8:5-8 says For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. [6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. [7] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. [8] So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. The flesh will always opposed the things of the Spirit. The flesh will hinder you from doing what you want (Galatians 5:17). No wonder Paul said 'For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do'(Romans 7: 19).
It is the weakness of the body that brings about sin. Romans 8: 12-13 (ERV) says “So, my brothers and sisters, we must not be ruled by our sinful selves. We must not live the way our sinful selves want. If you spend your lives doing what your sinful selves want, you will die spiritually. But if with the help of the Spirit you stop doing the wrong thing, you will have true life.”
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:12 - All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. In chapter 9 vs 27 he said 'But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway'. You and I need to put our bodies under control lest we be taken by the power of sin. For he that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil ( 1John 3: 8).
Is being rich evil? No the Scriptures say ' Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant'(Psalm 35: 27b). It is the attitude we put to it that makes it to be evil. By allowing riches to take the first place in our lives, by turning it to a must have by all means. By this, riches then become the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6: 10). It is not only money that can become our master, others are social media, fame or position, women, partying, alcohol etc. When we do all these at the expense of God's will definitely, they will push God and His services to the background in our lives. This is the reason why John said in 1 John 2:15-17, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. [17] And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
The antidotes to mammon are contentment and humility. Ask for the assistance of the Holy Spirit to achieve this. Also mind the company you keep,
