Introduction to numeration and notation
Numeration is defined as the act of counting numbers in words or numerals. Example 1 is one, 2 is two, 10 is ten, 100 is one hundred and 1000 is one thousand while notation is the act or system of using symbols to represent numbers. Example 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10
Counting and writing whole numbers up to 1000
Counting and writing whole numbers up to 1000 will be a lot easier if we classify the numbers into three groups:
a. 0 - 9 (these are numbers in units)
b. 10 - 99 (these are numbers in tens)
c. 100 - 999 (these are numbers in hundreds)
Example 1
1. Write 5 consecutive numbers after each of these numbers
a. 489
b. 334
Solution
a. 489, 490, 491, 492, 493, 494
b. 334, 335, 336, 337, 338, 339
Example 2
Write the number which is 100 more than the one below
a. 150
b. 800
Solution
a. 250
b. 900
Writing numbers in units of thousands in words
numbers from 1000 to 9999 contain four digits in thousands, hundreds, tens and units respectively. When writing these numbers, arrange the digits in such a way that the hundreds, tens and units are separated from the thousand by introducing space after every three digits from the right hand side
examples
1. 1120 is better written as 1 120 (one thousand, one hundred and twenty)
2. 2245 is better written as 2 245 (two thousand, two hundred and forty – five.
Counting and Writing numbers in units of thousands (1000 - 9999)
Numbers from 1000 to 9999 are classified under units of thousands. They include 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000. They all have four digits in units of thousands, hundreds, tens and units.
Example 3
Write in numbers
a. One thousand and ten
b. Five thousand, one hundred and twenty
Solution
a. One thousand and ten = 1000 + 10 = 1010
b. Five thousand, one hundred and twenty = 5000 + 100 + 20 = 5120

Writing numbers in units of thousands in figures
There are times numbers are written in words forms and we wish to translate them into figure or numeral forms. Simply break down the numbers into simple forms.
Example
Write
I. one thousand and four in figures
2. two thousand, one hundred and forty- four
Solution
1. One thousand and four = 1000 + 4 = 1004
2. two thousand one hundred and forty – four = 2000 + 100 + 44 =2144
Counting and writing numbers in tens of thousands
All numbers from 10 000 to 99 999 have 5 digits in tens of thousands, units of thousands, hundreds, tens and units respectively. Example 10 657 is 10 thousands, 6 hundreds, 5 tens, and 7 units. We can write these in words as ten thousand six hundred and fifty seven.
As a rule, to every number in tens of thousands such as 10 000, 11 000, 12 000, …, 80 000, 90 000, simply add the additional numbers which can come in hundreds, tens and units.
Writing numbers in tens of thousands in words
All numbers from 10 000 to 99 999 have five digits in tens of thousands, units of thousands, hundreds, tens and units respectively. Example 10 657 is 10 thousands, 6 hundreds, 5 tens and 7 units.

Writing numbers in tens of thousands in figures.
To write in figures, simply break the number into simple forms, then add up.
Example
Write ten thousand, two hundred and ninety – six in figures
Solution
Ten thousand = 10 000
Two hundred = 200
Ninety – six = + 96

Counting and writing numbers in hundreds of thousands.
Numbers from 100 000 to 999 999 have six digits in hundreds of thousands, tens thousands, units of thousands, hundreds, tens and units.
Example
Write two numbers that comes before and after each of these numbers
a. 100 005
b. 997 704
Solution
a. 100 003, 100 004, 100 005, 100 006, 100 007
b. 997 702, 997 703, 997 704, 997 705, 997 705

Numbers from 100 000 to 999 999 have six digits in hundreds of thousands, tens thousands, units of thousands, hundreds, tens and units.
Example
Write 432 329 in words
Solution
432 329 is 432 thousands, 3 hundreds, 2 tens and 9 units. Therefore 432 329 is four hundred and thirty – two thousand, three hundred and twenty nine.
Writing numbers in hundreds of thousands in figures
We split the numbers into simpler forms then add up
Example
Write two hundred and twenty - nine thousand, two hundred and seventy – six in numerals
Solution
two hundred and = 229 000
twenty - nine thousand
two hundred = 200
seventy – six = + 76
