INTRODUCTION TO METRIC WEIGHT
The heaviness of an object tells us what weight is. There are various objects for measuring weight such as the scale balance, the weighing and the spring balance. The basic unit of measuring weight is gram (g). The weight of heavy objects like bags of cement are measured in kilograms while light objects like pen, pencil are weighed in grams.
CONVERSION OF METRIC METRIC WEIGHT
10 milligrams (mg) = 1 centimeter (cg)
10 centigrams = 1 decigrams (dg)
10dg = 1 gram (g)
100cg = 1g
1000g = 1 kilogram (g)
1000kg = 1 ton (t)
Pupils should be Able to ;
Define weight, find the various units of measuring weight and with the aid of weight instruments like scale balance measure weights of an object.
STARTER
Begin the lesson by showing pupils a scale balance then ask to stand on it and measure their weights.
PLENARY
The pupils are given a Worksheet which contains different objects and they are to tick which one they think should be heavier as a result of size and nature of the object.
EXERCISE
Convert the following weights to gram:
i. 1kg
ii. 5kg
iii. 5mg
iv. 2200cg
Convert the following weights to kg:
i. 2500g
ii. 200g
iii. 1600mg
iv. 200cg

ADDITION OF METRIC WEIGHT
Addition of metric weight is similar to basic addition arithmetic. But note:
10mg = 1cg, 100cg = 1g, 1000g = 1kg, 1000kg = 1 t
EXAMPLES
1. Add 24cg 9mg to 33cg 8mg
Solution
PLENARY
Pupils should be able to add various units of weight together.
STARTER
Start the lesson by asking them questions on units of weight and perform basic addition operation.

SUBTRACTION OF METRIC WEIGHT
Subtraction of metric weight is similar to basic subtraction operation. But note:
10mg = 1cg, 100cg = 1g, 1000g = 1kg, 1000kg = 1 t
EXAMPLES
1. Subtract 11cg 7mg from 24cg 6mg
Solution
PLENARY
Pupils should be able to subtract various units of weights.
STARTER
Begin the lesson by asking them solutions on subtraction problems.
