METRIC LENGTH
Length is a measurement that tells how long or wide something is.
In the olden days people measure length of objects by using various parts of the body such as arm, foot, palms etc. But all these does not give accurate measurements.
Today people use instruments like ruler, tape rule, meter tape to accurately measure the length of objects. The standard unit of length measurements s metre (m)
CONVERSION OF METRIC LENGTH
10 millimetres (mm) = 1 centimeter (cm)
10 centimeters = 1 decimetre (dm)
10dm = 1 meter (m)
1000mm = 1m
100cm = 1m
1000m = 1 kilometer (km)
Examples
Solutions
a. The length of line a is 6cm
b. The length of line b is 2.5cm
Pupils should be Able to ;
Define length, find the various units of measuring length and also use a ruler to measure length of certain objects.
Begin the lesson by showing pupils a video about how length is being measured.
STARTER
The pupils are given a Worksheet which contains different lines, object and animals. Then with the aid of ruler they are to measure their lengths.

ADDITION OF METRIC LENGTH
Addition of metric length is similar to basic addition arithmetic. But note:
10mm = 1cm, 100cm = 1m, 1000m = 1km
EXAMPLES
1. Add 10cm 5mm to 15cm 7mm and 12cm 5mm
Solution
2. 5m 15cm 7mm + 4m 48cm 9mm + 6m 65cm 8mm
Solution
PLENARY
Pupils should be able to add various units of lengths together.
STARTER
Start the lesson by asking them questions on units of length and perform basic addition operation.

EXAMPLES
1. Subtract 5cm 9mm from 9cm 6mm
Solution
Pupils should be able to subtract various units of lengths.
STARTER
Begin the lesson by asking them questions on simple subtractions problems.
